The Clare City Bakery

Since 1896

Our Story

There is a doughnut shop and bakery in Clare, Michigan that has been in constant operation since 1896. This foundation business was within weeks of closing when the members of the Clare Police Department came to the rescue. All of them. That’s right, all nine members of the local police department banded together to save this historic business.

Dubbed “Cops and Doughnuts,” the business boasts handmade confections of all types. Join us for a warm fresh doughnut and a steaming cup of cops coffee while you enjoy the police decor and friendly, and very safe, atmosphere. Come and see the new store in Clare that everyone is talking about.

  • “Best Diner in Clare”

Traffic Stop Diner in the bakery is the best diner in Clare. They make the most awesome pulled pork sandwiches. They also have fresh cut fries that are the best. The atmosphere is also the best. You also get to talk to some of the "Cop" Owners that are there. The doughnuts and cookies are to die for also. It is worth the trip to see the bakery and diner. A must see.

  • Are you kidding me?  Spice cookies (orange frosting) the size of coffee saucers, cherry or apple fritters the size of a small plate, cinnamon rolls the size of the Hulk's fists.  This place is amazing, and the corresponding price is amazing. My favorite might still be the eclair-shaped donut with maple frosting and topped with 2 strips of bacon.  Yes, bacon. I get ADD, and can't decide what I want, everything is so good. I'm even interested in trying some of the basic diner food they have off on the side, made to order. Great place, I always make this a stop off point when we head up North.

    • It's a small world. I was on patrol in Southampton in England today when a group of American tourists stopped me and told me the story of a bakery in their town Clare. I interrupted them and said what 'cops and doughnuts!' And they all smiled and clapped happy I knew about it! I told them I had the pleasure of meeting Ryno, Bubba and co'. I ensured your fellow residents had a nice welcome here in England. Mark
